About

Welcome!

This, as you can see, is my blog.

Full Metal Aardvark Limited is my company. Its a small IT Consultancy that is trying to keep me gainfully employed and at the same time, out of my wife’s hair.

The blog came about because of a rash New Year’s Resolution. For years I’d scribbled things down, written the occasional column or paper here or there, and generally dabbled a bit. This year I was going to get it together and write!

My career in IT had started in late 1985 and it has covered a number of different roles. I’d started as a software engineer working in C and Assembly Language. I’d worked through the dizzying world of Object Oriented Analysis and Design, survived what felt like the Arms-Race of competing Design Methodologies and then, just when I thought I’d head off and make my fortune as a freelance C++ programmer, I promptly took up being a systems administrator and DBA.

From here I stumbled across waves of technology that dragged me kicking and screaming through the DotCom boom and mobile.

These days I spend more time looking at business problems and analysis. I’ve become more interested in the oceans of data we seem to swim in, and trying to see how we can use the information at our disposal.

Oh…and why the Aardvark thing? Well, if you want the Silver Rhino-esque “Aardvarks are lucky, cool and symbolic of great things” then, that’s why. But really, it was more to do with a Stanley Kubrick DVD, a 70’s progressive rock album cover and a looming deadline from my accountant.
