A Data Owner is a nominated individual who has responsibility for a particular data asset. By this we mean that they will hold a decision making role over such activities as:
- A Data Asset holds the wrong value or calculates the value incorrectly. The data requires a fix to be applied
- A Data Asset needs to updated to allow for new values, for example, a Postcode search might need to be extended to accommodate new postcodes
- A Data Asset derives from a new/updated source eg a legacy system is replaced, and the replacement system becomes the new ‘golden source’ for a particular data asset.
- A 3rd Party wishes to use the Data Asset eg a data feed to a 3rd party requires the data asset to be included/integrated within the data transfer
A Data Owner is a decision-making role; day to day actions are delegated to either a Data Steward or a Data Custodian.
- A Data Steward is a business-based role who will provide business input and business signoff to changes or the signoff of a data defect fix.
- A Data Custodian is an IT role who will undertake any IT changes required eg add new reference data value to a dropdown list of values.
